What’s So Special About the Rancheria Grande?
´Early Spanish expeditions into land now known as Texas encountered 23 Coahuiltecan clan groups that lived, traded, and intermarried in what they aptly named the Ranchería Grande, as the area was so large.
´Although the Ranchería Grande was well documented hundreds of years ago, it has only recently been certified by archeologists to be in SE Milam County.
´Your trail walk will retrace paths used by Native Americans over hundreds (maybe thousands) of years, that continued to be in use during Spanish Colonial times and later.
´Your walk will lead you to a picnic table on top of a hill. Excavation and research by amateur and professional archaeologists have shown that this site was home to villages periodically over the last 12,000 years! The panoramic view from the hilltop was needed for the safety of the village. Nearby, Pin Oak Creek (a year-round, spring-fed, clear-water creek) was probably a major reason why this site was so popular over the ages.
