Name: The Tonkawa Tribe: Who are they, really?
Date: May 4, 2023
Time: 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM CDT
Event Description:
Bob O’Dell, author and documentary producer, will speak on May 4, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the Kay Theater in Rockdale, Texas. His presentation is entitled: “The Tonkawa Tribe: Who are they really?”

The Rancheria Grande Chapter of the El Camino Real de los Tejas National Trail Association, in recognition of National Trails Day 2023, will host the presentation.

Bob is the writer and lead producer of an upcoming feature-length documentary currently being filmed about the Tonkawa Tribe and will show the film’s trailer during the presentation. In the presentation, Bob will explain how he became interested in the Tonkawa Tribe, how they have broken his own misconceptions of what a native American tribe is like. He will then contrast the current tribe with the historical descriptions by explorers and settlers and will propose how we might reconcile these differences. During this talk, Bob will share a number of personal and historical stories in hopes of revealing a deeper understanding of the tribe.

Ancestors of the Tonkawa Tribe inhabited a large central Texas region that includes Milam county, and the tribe was identified by early Spanish explorers in their diaries as being part of the assemblage of the “Rancheria Grande.” A portion of the Rancheria Grande, located just north of Gause, Texas, in Milam County has recently been the subject of archaeological investigation.
