Milam County Historical Museum presents History of Texas Prison System by David Stacks

BIO for David Stacks 

David Stacks was born and raised in Freestone County in the town of Teague, Texas, approximately 90 miles north of Huntsville, Texas. 

He began employment with the then named Texas Department of Corrections in 1979, being assigned to the Diagnostic Unit now named the Jay Byrd Unit. 

He was elevated through the ranks of Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Assistant Warden, Warden, Director of Training, and retired while in the position of Deputy Director of Management Operations, after having worked 30 years for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice – Correctional Institutions Division. He worked through this elevation of promotions of allowed assignments at the Ramsey Units, Retrieve Unit, Ferguson Unit, Torres Unit, Darrington Unit and Eastham Unit. 

After retirement from the TDCJ David became an employee of Management Training Corporation in the capacity of Warden, of a facility responsible for managing inmates in the custody of the United States Marshal Office and for civil detainees under the care of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. 

Recently he became Director of the Texas Prison Museum after serving on the Texas Prison Museum’s board of directors for the past 15 years. 

Davis is married to Jan who was born and raised in Port Neches, Texas.
